Urgent Intervention Request: Investigative Journalist Targeted and Blinded in Mauritania
To: Reporters Without Borders (RSF)
I am writing to you with a heavy heart but a steadfast spirit. My name is Mohamed Lemine Ould Yahya, a Mauritanian investigative journalist and director of the "Al-Ialami" news agency.
I have paid the ultimate price for my commitment to the truth. After publishing a series of dangerous investigations into the "pharmaceutical mafia" and the trade of counterfeit medicines in Mauritania, I was subjected to a brutal chemical attack. This targeted assault resulted in the total loss of my eyesight, leaving me in complete darkness.
Beyond the physical attack, I am now facing a systematic "institutional execution." Local official unions and authorities have turned a blind eye to my case, denying me my basic rights to medical treatment abroad and professional protection. I am being marginalized and silenced because I refused to compromise.
I call upon Reporters Without Borders to:
Recognize my case as a direct targeted attack on press freedom.
Pressure the Mauritanian authorities to provide urgent medical evacuation (Medical Lift) and a transparent investigation into the chemical attack.
Provide international legal and humanitarian support to ensure that investigative journalism does not become a death sentence in Mauritania.
The "Mekawala" unions (corrupt unions) have failed me, but I believe in the international solidarity of free journalists.
Sincerely, Mohamed Lemine Ould Yahya Director of Al-Ialami Agency, Mauritania
